Language translation is not only about translating words in a given language into another. It goes beyond that, if one thinks about it carefully and mulls over the role language translation has played over the history of mankind one will realize that language translators have been instrumental in making alien cultures intelligible. If one takes into account the influence of the King James Bible on the English speaking world then one can safely conclude that the translators who worked on translating the Bible from Hebrew and Greek to English have also been responsible for shaping up their culture and history.
However it’s hugely ironical that a great-to-good translation usually goes unnoticed simply because the translator has captured the spirit and language of the original so well that the translated version seems to have been the original work. In fact there are many translated works that are revered as great works of literature on their own right. Apart from the King James Bible they are The Odyssey, The Iliad, The Arabian Nights, C.K. Scott Moncrieff’s English translations of Proust and August Schlegel and Ludwig Tieck’s German translations of Shakespeare.
Considering all this it is quite heartening to see translators being honored through events like the Times Literary Supplement’s Translation prize. Some of the works honored this year include The Accordionist’s Son by Bernardo Atxaga which was translated from Spanish by Margaret Jull Costa and Burning Secret, a novella written by Stefan Zweig and translated from German by Anthea Bell.

We’ve come across a requirement for Japanese translation volunteers. It’s an exciting opportunity in which Japanese language students can use their language skills in a live and fairly challenging environment – a valuable learning opportunity for language students. Last year the marathon had over 14,400 runners participating from Japan; this year the numbers are projected to increase to 15,000.
This requirement for Japanese translators is for the upcoming 37th Honolulu Marathon. Around 150 volunteer translators are needed. They would be assigned to work with doctors and nurses who will be looking after the Japanese runners while being posted at various medical stations built along the length of the course which is 26.2 miles long. The Japanese translators required should preferably be advanced Japanese language students from prep schools and colleges. The 37th Honolulu Marathon would take place on the 13th of Dec and translators would be required to work in shifts of 4 a.m. to 9:30 a.m and 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

ProZ.com, the popular online translators’ community is going to organize the language translation industry’s first virtual conference. According to Prox.com, 5,000 translators have already registered for the conference slated to be held on September 30, 2009 which is celebrated as the International Translation Day. The Kurodahan Press was started in 2002 by a few enterprising language professionals from Japan with the intention of forming a publishing house that would serve the interests of both Japanese and English readers. In its endeavor to bring quality Japanese work to English readers, Kurodahan Press has announced the Kurodahan Press Translation Prize, which will be awarded for the English translation of a given Japanese short story.

Twenty years ago UNESCO instituted September 30th as Translation Day at the request of the International Federation of Translators. The day was chosen as it was feast-day of St. Jerome who is regarded as the patron saint of language translators.
The International Federation of translators celebrates Translation Day every year by suggesting a theme which would serve as a unifying topic on which language translators from all over the world would think and write about in relation to translation.
This year’s theme is “Working Together” and all translators who make their voices heard through their blogs and other tools including social networking are invited to share their thoughts on an international level. The International Federation for Translators has provided some suggestions to help guide the discussion efficiently.
Translators are encouraged to take a fresh look at their profession which has been popularly associated with long hours of solitary work. Times have changed and we should now think about how working collectively can contribute towards taking professional translation services to a significantly improved and better level. In fact, the proliferation of Internet has made it very easy for translators across the world to stay in touch and join forces.
We should take into account the increasing complexity of language translation work. A global pool of translators can be of tremendous help to all translators by fueling an exchange of ideas and strategies which would improve the quality of work, as well as efficiency. The involvement of translation buyers in this network would also go a long way in improving language translation services all over the world.

There is another conference in the pipeline which is meant for proofreaders and editors. However, since most professional translators perform proofreading and editing, the conference would be helpful to them as well. The event in question is the annual conference of The Society for Editors and Proofreaders which is going to be held from the 13th to 15th September 2009 at Vanbrugh College, University of York.
The conference would include seminars, presentations and lectures around the topic - ‘Editing in the 21st Century’. A wide number of issues would be covered including on-screen editing, copywriting techniques, grammar, information and advice about useful software like Adobe InDesign and tips to help make a smooth transition to Microsoft Word 2007.
Some of the seminars would be dealing with issues related to freelancers, marketing oneself, advantages of blogging, relaxation techniques and work-life balance.
